Terrorism still a factor in Spain
Published on December 3, 2004 By historyishere In Current Events
At about 12:30EST, 4 bombs went off at 4 Madrid gas stations... perhaps signalling a new round of terrorist activities in Spain by the ETA. Of course, these bombings follow two weeks of raids against the group's holdings in France during October which netted:

652 kilograms (1,434 pounds) of dynamite
148 grenades
32 grenade launchers
277 guns -- including assault rifles and Uzi-type machine guns
thousands of rounds of ammunition
and nearly $90,000 in cash.

This is in addition to 2 of the group's major players and 16 other members being arrested during these raids as well.

The explosive devices have been described as low-yield and there are reportedly no casualties at this time. However, these actions may be the first step in an escalating series of terrorist attacks by this Basque separatist group.

The ETA(Euskadi ta Askatasuna), a Basque independence group, had given warning about the attacks before they happened.

The preliminary Reuters report is here:

"Those who would trade freedom for security shall have neither freedom nor security." - Benjamin Franklin

I'll see your Franklin with another quote that says a similar thing:

"You and I are told increasingly that we have to choose between a left or right, but I would like to suggest that there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down — up to a man’s age-old dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order — or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism, and regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course."
