Plus a new one that will probably end up that way.
After seeing another blogger's list of the 100 greatest videos ever... well, it got me to thinking about some of the videos that I thought were great, and don't often appear on lists... now, I am not talking about the Windowlickers, Rabbits in the Headlights and Buddy Hollies out there.... I am talking about some videos that didn't get that much air play, or were sequestered to certain shows or are largely forgotten when people think about modern videos.
Madvillain- ALL CAPS: This is a recent entry in the good video category... and its Hip Hop, so I am not going to judge it so much on the music as the visual style... which is basically like one of the crappy comics I used to read as a kid... the art style almost reminds me of the old, old Incredible Hulk Cartoon from the 1960's.... the one that predates the Spiderman one that a lot of us know. This is a rather recent video, but I think it has some staying power.
ALL CAPS
Cibo Matto- Sugar Water: Now, this twisted bit of video is from the demented mind of Michel Gondry.... and in execution and idea it is impeccable. Basically it appears that he shot the video in one take and in split screen, starts the take from the beginning and plays it forwards on the left and on the right, takes the same footage and starts and the end and goes backwards... with the action in both halves of the screen being parallel and synched....its very trippy indeed.
Get yourself some Sugar Water
Gomez-Bring It On: This is the video that got me into Gomez. Basically it is shot like a series of 70's safety flicks/ads... and the film is aged to look like it is much older than it really is, and it is just silly enough to be fun... like the goofy safety video acting and everything... which might be a result of the members of the band not being actors, but it works well.
So Come on, Bring It ON!
Pulp- This is Hardcore: For a song about porno, this is a stylish and elegant video. 1 part Douglas Sirk movie, 1 part film noire, 1 part Hollywood bavylon with a Busby Berkeley-like interlude thrown in at the end for taste, this is a seductive video that David Lynch would probably love. Such wonderful use of color(though the online version's is a bit muted), make this one of the best videos I saw during the late 1990's. I mean, I would watch the movie that you see in bits and pieces in this video.
Some Hardcore action from Pulp
