Election Results tank Movie... if you believe execs....
Published on November 10, 2004 By historyishere In Movie Reviews
I got a good laugh this afternoon when I read a story on the Internet Movie Database... when I read the reason that the studio attributed to the failure for the wretched remake of Alfie is not that it was a bad film(even though it was recently named the 6th worst remake of all time)... no... it was because of the ELECTION RESULTS!?! Huh? That is the lamest excuse EVER.

I mean, if all movies were down last weekend, maybe they would be on to something, but the Incredibles did incredible business, so that theory doesn't hold water. Of course, this being Hollywood, no one would admit that it was a bad idea to make this movie, and the fact that it was made and did poorly couldn't be because it wasn't a good idea, because if the analysis pinned that as the reason, well, that would derail the industry, one that spends a lot of its development dollars on making remakes instead of spending money on... I don't know... original ideas.

Wayne Llewellyn, the president of distribution at Paramount just couldn't admit that though. "It could be the mood of the country right now. It seems to be the result of the election. Maybe they didn't want to see a guy that slept around."

Or maybe they didn't want to see a classic 1966 Michael Caine film sulleyed by modern tinkering. This is quickly becoming a rule filmmakers should follow... DO NOT remake a movie that Michael Caine starred in!

Hopefully, this will be the last time the election is used as an excuse for other things.

I take it you like Michael Caine? ! I personally dont like Jude Law, so I was not going to see it anyway. And they are talking about him being the next James Bond? Gross!

Well, you know what they say. Excuses are like. . .

It looked like a horrid film to me. No desire to see it in the first place. Then after the election, well. . .

...good advice.

I don't understand remakes. I mean WHY? How arrogant do you have to be to take something already considered classic and suppose you can somehow make it better?

And as for "Alfie," well that was a movie about nothing to begin with - and not in the good way like Seinfeld.

Its not so much that I love Michael Caine... its just the fact that they remake his good movies as crappy movies now and I believe in the Caine-Hackman theory...

No matter what time it is, 24 hours a day, you can find a Michael Caine or Gene Hackman movie playing on TV.

I think of all the names bandied about for the new James Bond, I think I liked Clive Owen the best after seeing him as "the driver" in all those BMW short films.... especially the ones called Ticker and Powder Keg.
