Election Results tank Movie... if you believe execs....
I got a good laugh this afternoon when I read a story on the Internet Movie Database... when I read the reason that the studio attributed to the failure for the wretched remake of Alfie is not that it was a bad film(even though it was recently named the 6th worst remake of all time)... no... it was because of the ELECTION RESULTS!?! Huh? That is the lamest excuse EVER.
I mean, if all movies were down last weekend, maybe they would be on to something, but the Incredibles did incredible business, so that theory doesn't hold water. Of course, this being Hollywood, no one would admit that it was a bad idea to make this movie, and the fact that it was made and did poorly couldn't be because it wasn't a good idea, because if the analysis pinned that as the reason, well, that would derail the industry, one that spends a lot of its development dollars on making remakes instead of spending money on... I don't know... original ideas.
Wayne Llewellyn, the president of distribution at Paramount just couldn't admit that though. "It could be the mood of the country right now. It seems to be the result of the election. Maybe they didn't want to see a guy that slept around."
Or maybe they didn't want to see a classic 1966 Michael Caine film sulleyed by modern tinkering. This is quickly becoming a rule filmmakers should follow... DO NOT remake a movie that Michael Caine starred in!
Hopefully, this will be the last time the election is used as an excuse for other things.
