A little bit weird, a little bit political with a lot of humor.
Come on... you can tell us!
Published on August 25, 2004 By historyishere In Music

Oh, we all have them... those songs we know we just shouldn't like, but something inside us just makes it so irresistible. Songs with bad lyrics or odd instrumentation, or from an artist that is tacky... or you love heavy metal but deep down, you just need to hear Debbie Boone belt out "You Light Up My Life" when no one is home. Or you like jazz and reggae, but the theme song from Footloose just gets you going too.

Come on, I know you want to confess. It'll be ok... there will be no judgment here.

I'll tell you what, I even do a little quid pro quo here and tell you a few of my groaners:

I recently did battle with the long version of Men Without Hats' "Safety Dance"... it started and I just couldn't stop it for almost 2 hours. There is also this whole drunken karaoke duet incident with Abba's "Dancing Queen," where I knew all the words,  that I am not particularly proud of, but in the interest of being honest, I feel it is necessary to be honest. And yes, I will admit it: I liked "Barbie Girl" and "Viva Forever" when they came out... yeah, I finally said it, and it's great to get it off my chest!

So, now that I've gotten the ball rolling... who will add to this motley gang of songs we wish we could forget. I've also included as an external link VH1's list of the worst 50 songs ever recorded to help you remember a few of them.

wow, I can't believe We Build This City by Starship is ranked the worst song. I thought that song was cool and I still do.

"Run Joey Run" by David Geddes. Sorry about the Safety Dance, I think that might have been my fault.

Raven....Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! lol

I still say the all time WORST song is "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". I wanna claw my face off every time i hear it!

"Love Plus One" by Haircut 100 (yes, I love it, but it was a BAAAAAD song).

Ravenblack: Someone I worked with felt the same way about that song. But its ok... this is a no judgment zone

Edith: Actually, it never would have happened if I didn't see Wil Wheaton on Call for Help... because I ended up reading this entry on his blog that night.

thatoneguy: I don't suppose you want to claw your face off because you love it, right

Gideon: I just had to go listen to a sample of that. That is SO 80's new wave! Its ok though Gideon. Its going to be Ok.

Wow, now I'm buggin' out because I thought I did a blog entry years ago about how the Safety Dance is my antidote to all other ear-worms. Or rather, it's the ear-worm that trumps all others for me, even Run Joey Run. It's not coming up in my search though so I dunno WTF.

How about anything by Howard Jones or Thompson Twins? They were just...so damn catchy!
on Aug 25, 2004
Edith: I've always said that the way to get rid of those annoying catchy songs in your head is to think of the old theme from the Wide World of Sports.

Gideon: How about kajagoogoo? Too shy, shy, hush hush, eye to eye.

Ok, I have "hold me now" stuck in my head.... Cosell.... take me away. *thinks of the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat*

My favorite all time movie scene on bad music you love: "Tommy Boy", when the Carpenters' song "Superstar" comes on:

"Doncha remember you told me you loved me baby...."

Gideon, I love that scene....

Speaking of SNL alums.... you just made me think of an episode of SNL that had Helen Hunt and Hanson on it. They had a sketch on it where Will Ferrell and Helen Hunt(both wearing earmuffs) trapped Hanson in an elevator and made them listen to MMMBop over and over and over to show them the pain they caused the world by writing that song... but Will's earmuffs come off, and he gets infected by MMMBop's gloriously tacky beat while Hanson escape...

and that reminded of this Far Side comic when thinking about that.

Tubthumping

on Aug 25, 2004
Homer: I get knocked down, I get knocked down again,
You're never gonna knock me down,
I drink a whisky drink,
I drink a chocolate drink,
And when I have to pee,
I use the kitchen sink,
I sing the song that reminds me of a urinating guy...

Man, I've sung Tubthumping quite a few times at karaoke... I mean, everyone knows enough of the words that even when you are drunk, its fun to sing.

Without looking at the list I can honestly say i agree with all of you.
Except Raven, sorry but Starship was the most ripe tripe out therte, and that is saying something.

I Love Starship

I can not STAND Tubthumping -- it's right up there with Push the Little Daisies and Spaceman as my least favourite songs ever.

I actually liked Viva Forever - but I was 12 when wannabe came out - OH My Gosh - how can two princes -- spin doctors be in a Bad song list -- I love what's up and we didn't start the fire, from a distance - anything Meatloaf, breakfast at tiffanys and the theme from friends.

Oi - that's shocking
