A little bit weird, a little bit political with a lot of humor.

I was just reading a story on The Wargamer (amongst other places) about a recent ordinance that is going to have a huge impact on cyber-cafes in Los Angeles, an ordinance that is forcing these establishments to basically change the way they do business. At first, this doesn't seem to be relevant for most of the people here... after all, the majority of us are at home or at an office or school using the internet, so it wouldn't affect us. What bothers me is the suspicion that these places are becoming a haven for gang activity isn't backed up by the facts (at least by the way they are presented in the story):

When asked to support the claim that children playing videogames were creating violent gangs, the LA police pointed to an analysis that found 86 percent of the 134 people arrested at cybercafes were minors, most for curfew and truancy violations - neither of which are violent crimes.

And in the pursuit of trying to stop this alleged gang activity, what I suspect might happen is many of these places will close, resulting in a large group of people being denied access to the internet and the information it provides, as it might not be in their financial interests to make the changes mandated by the ordinance such as installing surveillance cameras and reducing the number of computers on site.
